BACK TO HAPPY PEOPLE

Blue Pelican

Ethical, honest and knowledge-based recruitment. People want to be treated with respect through a process that can be daunting and stressful.

Challenge

Blue Pelican had mainly recruited their employees direct, however after Covid, the business, like many, went through a period of change including a long-term Director leaving the business, who had always been responsible for the internal recruitment and attraction of experienced and trainee recruiters. They very much made internal recruitment a focus of the business.

Conrad Chant, International Search Director & Owner, who took on the role of leading the internal recruitment at Blue Pelican says:

“We took all this change as positive. We had a real thirst for change and a need for change within the business, which is why my initial contact with Cheryl was to engage in her rec 2 rec services.

Coming out of Covid it had been possible to find recruiters. We would laugh because we’re a recruitment firm who can’t recruit. We did all the classic mistakes with job boards, made some calls to old contacts, very little head hunting and no meaningful social media presence whatsoever. We just expected people to come to us and they weren’t.

I spoke to Cheryl about rec2rec services, and she pitched to empower us to recruit our own internal hires and it made the most sense out of anything I’ve ever heard before. It was important that we just changed our attitude towards it. I’ve heard a thousand pitches from people, but I genuinely believed what Cheryl told me during that initial conversation and the rest is history.”

After meeting with Conrad and listening to his challenges and asking questions on a virtual call, GSR2R felt the best and quickest way to empower Blue Pelican would be to start with their employee branding – making them visible to the recruiters that were looking for a new role.

After another call with the hiring managers and second founding member, we arranged to meet in person for a bespoke masterclass uniquely tailored for Blue Pelican, that would make them visible to recruiters.

The founder members and managers all attended and throughout the day we got to decide who was going to take responsivity going forward to implement the strategy, which is key to success.

“Cheryl has an empathetic sales process whereby she nudges and controls. She isn’t going to just tell you this is the way to be and that I loved”. Conrad Chant.

Outcomes

“Cheryl made employee branding our focus initially. We had a company wide, weekly social media meeting where we got the teams involved. Our Google reviews have gone from 3 to 50 reviews in 6 months and we increased our rating.

Cheryl helped us understand how to recruit and motivate different generations, especially Gen Z, which had been a real challenge for us in the past. We have also produced employee branding material that we’re proud of.”

“Everybody should embrace training, but sometimes it’s difficult when you are in your mid-fifties and, you’ve done the job for 25 years . It’s not change that’s necessarily difficult, but some of the times thinking that somebody might know more than you. Then you look at the cost as well, the time out of the office, the amount, the time to action the training. We had huge reservations but I’m delighted to say they have been completely, and totally reversed. Six months on, I still use the information Cheryl shared daily. Cheryl chased us to make sure things were done as well, which has been brilliant.
I am talking regularly about a piece of training that I had six or seven months ago. I can’t think of any trainer in the past 30 years that I’ve used that I talk about this often!”
