Interviewing When You’re Not Hiring Can Hurt Your Brand

By Lauren McLeod | 20th June 2025

Here’s what recruiters want you to know.

Interviewing when you’re not hiring can hurt your brand

We’re sharing this because we’ve heard it too many times now, and it’s starting to wear thin in this market.

Recruiters are telling us they’re frustrated.

They’re going through multiple interviews rounds with companies, only to be told at the end: “We’re actually not hiring right now.”
And they’re left wondering: Why was I even put through that process in the first place?

Now, we know this might feel a bit uncomfortable to hear. But I’m saying it with love and with more than 20 years in Rec2Rec, listening to what brilliant recruiters really want (and what puts them off).

Here’s what they’re telling us these kinds of experiences do:

Damages trust.

Recruiters are busy people. They’re giving up time, preparing, turning down other opportunities because they believe your role is real.
When it turns out it isn’t, it feels like a waste of their time. And in our industry? People talk.

Damages your brand.

Top recruiters want to work for decisive businesses with a clear vision.
If your process feels vague or like a “maybe,” they’ll quietly bow out and say yes to somewhere with clarity and conviction.

Damages future hires.

Some recruiters we speak to have said, “I wouldn’t go back there, I went through all of that for nothing.”
You might not remember the conversation, but they do. And they’re unlikely to give it another shot.

So, why is it happening?

From what we’ve seen, it’s often one of these:

  • A habit of “always being open to talent”
  • A bit of FOMO, what if we miss someone great?
  • A well-meaning idea that if someone’s amazing, you’ll find a way to make room

But here’s the thing: if there’s no real need, no sign-off, and no clear hiring plan, it’s not fair on the recruiter—and it’s quietly undermining your brand.

What recruiters wish you’d do instead

Just be upfront.

If you’re not hiring right now, but you’re open to talking for future planning say that.
Most recruiters will appreciate the honesty and still be happy to connect (especially if they’re treated with respect).

It’s the pretending that it’s a real role, only to find out later it isn’t, that causes the damage.

We know the market will turn and when it does, everyone will be chasing the same small pool of standout recruiters.
The ones you want to hire will remember how you treated them when you weren’t hiring.

Handle that well, and you’ll stand out for all the right reasons when you are.
