Recruiters are moving companies right now

By GSR2R Admin | 23rd February 2023

A bold statement, yes, but equally true.

We’ve experienced a great start to 2023 at GR2R, representing and placing outstanding candidates. Whilst January has a track record of being a slower month, we see no evidence of that. Quite the opposite, having registered high-performing recruiters as early as the 3rd of January.

Therefore, it’s good news for recruitment businesses because recruiters ARE moving companies right now, and we’re connected with them.

Factors behind this trend

So why are top recruiters looking to move right now?

  1. Confidence in the market

Although 90% of recruiters we talked to at the end of last year didn’t report a drop in billings or activity, they were concerned about the growing threat of a recession. Therefore, they stayed put.

While we are still waiting to see how 2023 pans, out, by the end of last year, the news became more positive. That was backed up with a great start to the year. As a result, recruiters feel confident to move roles and started to put feelers out early.

  1. Happiness trumps money

High performers are willing to leave desks that are fully established and making £500k plus to be in a role or company that fulfils them, and they are enjoy working at. That’s because being happy in a role is high on the agenda for top performing recruiters.

In one month, I have seen two £500k + billers want to leave their current employer for this reason. Usually, I would see two a year at this high level. These stats are reinforcing that being happy is a high priority. Happiness at work extends the environment they work in, company culture and how they are treated at work.

  1. Bigger desk opportunity

Recruiters are looking for bigger desk opportunity because they want to have the ability to work with more clients. 2021 was one of the busiest years I have seen in my 23 years in rec2rec. Clients and candidates reported record billings and job numbers were significantly elevated. To cope with the increased job flow, companies created niche desks, to work with fewer clients and continue to provide a great service. Fast forward to the current market, where roles are coming in from fewer clients. As a result, recruiters feel they are too restricted within their niche and need a wider client base to continue to deliver top billings.

Consequently, GSR2R is seeing an increase of top performing recruiters from larger recruitment businesses, wanting to join smaller business because they tend to get less restrictions regarding clients.

2023 trends wrap up

7 weeks into the 2023 and these are the trends we are experiencing at GSR2R within the recruitment market. I am sharing this information with you for two reasons, retention and hiring.

  1. Retention – To retain your current staff, you must be aware of their happiness at work and whether their client base is big enough for their career plans.
  2. Hiring – High performers are moving; therefore you need to capitalise on this opportunity. If you are recruiting and struggling to attract the right talent, I can help with this.
