Why more recruiters are choosing employee-owned businesses

For years, recruiters have assessed opportunities in a fairly similar way.

Basic salary, commission structure, career progression and brand.

And whilst all of those things remain important, let’s talk about why more recruiters are choosing employee-owned businesses.

More recruiters are now looking beyond the traditional package and asking a different question: What am I actually helping to build?

That is one of the reasons employee owned businesses are becoming increasingly attractive within the recruitment sector.

What is an employee-owned business?

In simple terms, an employee owned business is a company that is owned, either fully or partly, by its employees, usually through an Employee Ownership Trust.

Rather than a small group of shareholders benefiting from the long term success of the business, employees share in that success too.

For recruiters, this can create a very different experience of work.

You share in the success

One of the biggest attractions is that your success is not limited to your individual desk performance.

Of course, recruitment remains a performance driven industry and strong billers will continue to be rewarded.

However, employee ownership means that when the business performs well, employees often benefit too through profit share, bonuses and other financial rewards.

You are not just helping yourself succeed.

You are helping the business succeed.

Greater transparency and visibility

Many employee owned businesses operate with a greater level of transparency.

Recruiters often have a better understanding of company performance, strategy and long term plans.

Rather than feeling disconnected from decision making, employees can feel much closer to the bigger picture.

For recruiters who are commercially minded, this visibility can be incredibly motivating.

A stronger sense of purpose

One of the most common themes we hear from recruiters working in employee owned businesses is a stronger sense of ownership.

Not ownership in a legal sense.

Ownership in the way people think, behave and contribute.

When people feel connected to the success of the business, they are often more invested in helping colleagues, supporting growth and building for the future.

The culture can become more collaborative because success is shared more widely.

Built for the long term

Traditional businesses can sometimes be focused on short term targets or future exit plans.

Employee owned businesses are often built with a different mindset.

The focus is frequently on sustainable growth, long term stability and creating a business that continues to thrive for future generations of employees.

For recruiters considering where they want to spend the next five or ten years of their career, this can be an attractive proposition.

More than commission

Commission will always matter in recruitment.

It should.

Top performers deserve to be rewarded.

But many experienced recruiters are now looking for something alongside financial reward.

They want:

  • to understand where the business is heading.
  • visibility of the bigger picture.
  • to feel their contribution matters beyond their own billings.
  • to be part of building something meaningful.

Is employee ownership right for everyone?

Not necessarily.

Some recruiters will always be motivated purely by individual earnings and that’s absolutely fine.

However, for recruiters who value collaboration, long term growth, transparency and shared success, employee ownership can offer something genuinely different.

It provides an opportunity to be part of a business rather than simply work for one.

And for many recruiters, that is becoming an increasingly important part of choosing their next role.
